Corvette and Volt Top The 2018 Made in America Index List
The 2018 Kogod Made in America Auto Index was released in August and confirmed what many Chevy fans already knew: If you’re looking for the best made in America vehicle on the market today, you’ll find it at a Chevy dealership.
The index ranks over 500 vehicles using data from the American Automotive Labeling Act and other criteria, including profit margin, labor content, major component sourcing and major location of research and development activities, to determine which automaker’s vehicles can claim the title of “Best in the U.S.A.”
This year, General Motors claimed the two top spots with the Chevrolet Corvette and the Chevrolet Volt.
“The U.S. auto industry is critical to our economy, and American automakers are driving more growth and jobs in the auto manufacturing sector,” Matt Blunt, former governor of Missouri and the president of the American Automotive Policy Council, said in a recent statement on American University’s 2018 Kogod Made in America Auto Index.
The Chevrolet Corvette edged out the Volt to achieve top honors in the index with a top score of 83.5 points. The Volt earned a total of 83 points. The Ford F150 4x2 5.0-liter, Ford F-150 4x4 2.7-liter and the Lincoln Continental all shared third place with matching 82.5 point scores.
The Kogod Made in America Auto Index was created in 2013 by Kogod School of Business Associate Professor Frank DuBois. In a statement announcing the results of this year’s index, DuBois explained the value of the list for consumers.
“For a consumer interested in buying American or perhaps just curious about the ‘DNA’ of their car, my index lists almost every car available for sale in the U.S. market. Most other indexes stop at the top 10 most American cars. You don’t know about the bottom ten. Or the middle fifty,” DuBois said.
While the announcement that the Corvette came out on top of this year’s list was certainly exciting, it wasn’t a surprise to Chevy dealers.
The 2019 Corvette ZR1 is one of the most exciting cars of the last decade and its arrival on dealership lots has stirred up quite a bit of buzz. The new ZR1 is the first Corvette convertible since the original 1970 model-year ZR1 and it’s slated to come with an insane suite of performance and tech components to boot.
“The ZR1 convertible is a no-compromise supercar,” Tadge Juechter, Corvette executive chief engineer, said in a statement. “Thanks to the strong structure, the suspension tuning between coupe and convertible models is identical, meaning the ZR1 convertible offers the same benchmark performance, including a top speed of over 200 mph.”
