Chevy Adds a new “Buckle to Drive” Feature for Teens
Chevy has been on the cutting edge of teen driving technology for a while now. In 2016, they first launched their Teen Driver technology in the Chevy Malibu, and now, they are introducing a Buckle to Drive feature for teens. Learn more about both of these below.
Teen Driver was first introduced on the Chevy Malibu in 2016. This was safe driving technology built specifically for new teen drivers. The Teen Driver system automatically engages safety technology like Forward Collision Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Traction Control, and more. The Teen Driver system also allows parents to set speed limits and stereo volume limits for their teen. The system can also help you set geographic limits for your teen so that you are notified if they go outside the limit.
Now, Chevy is introducing their Buckle to Drive feature for teens. This feature is being put in place because teenagers tend to forget or ignore seatbelt use, and wearing seatbelts can save lives. The Buckle to Drive feature will prevent teens from driving until they put on their seatbelt. The feature will lock the gear shift until the seatbelt is clicked into place, and it will work by programming a key fob to have this specific Teen Driver feature. This feature will be standard in some 2020 Chevy vehicles like the Traverse, Colorado, and Malibu.
The Verge tells us, “According to Tricia Morrow, safety strategy engineer at Chevy parent company General Motors, the automaker has been testing it on fleet customers for the past several years, but also recently gave it to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for testing. The institute found that when compared to audible seatbelt reminders found in most cars, Chevy’s Buckle to Drive feature was 16 percent more effective in getting drivers to buckle up, Morrow said.”
If you have a new teen driver, you may want to look for a vehicle that has their safety at top of mind. With Chevy, you know that your teen is being looked out for. Most new Chevy vehicles come standard with the Teen Driver system because we believe that safety for your teen is of the utmost importance.
