2019 Cruze Gets CVT for Fleet Buyers

Fans of the Chevy Cruze may be wondering when a new Cruze model will hit a Chevy dealership near you. But if you’ve been following the rumors concerning a certain secret Cruze CVT project, we’re afraid we’ve got some bad news for you: the automaker has no plans to make the CVT available to consumers any time soon.

The EPA quietly confirmed the existence of a 2019 Chevy Cruze model with a continuously variable transmission in the Summer, but Chevy has now released a statement notifying fans that 2019 Chevy models with a continuously variable transmission won’t be available for purchase.

Well, they won’t be available to most people.

According to a report from Green Car Reports (which reached out to Chevrolet for comment after the EPA’s announcement), a spokesperson for the automaker revealed that a limited number of CVT Cruzes would be available for fleet sales but will not be available for normal retail.

“For the 2019 model year, a small number of Cruzes were built with a CVT for fleet only,” Katie Minter, a spokeswoman for Chevrolet, reportedly told Green Car Reports.

That means, for now the Cruze is only available with a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a 1.6-liter turbo-diesel engine. The four-cylinder comes paired to a six-speed automatic transmission and has an EPA rating of 28 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and 32 mpg combined. The turbo-diesel comes paired to a nine-speed automatic and gets 31 mpg in the city, 48 mpg on the highway and 37 mpg combined. The hatchback version of the diesel has slightly reduced numbers (30/45/35) but the Cruze’s ratings are certainly worth the hype.

The fleet-only CVT models are designed to improve fuel economy without adding the cost of a hybrid or all-electric system. Obviously, we’re disappointed that local Chevy fans won’t get to see a 2019 Chevy Cruze CVT on the Ray Chevrolet lot, but the 2019 Cruze models have plenty to offer even without the addition of a CVT system.

New 2019 Cruze models come with a range of fun new features, including a standard infotainment system with a 7-inch digital touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple Car Play capabilities, OnStar with 4G LTE connectivity, a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, keyless open and start, heated seats and a heating steering wheel. The newly updated vehicle also comes with a re-styled front fascia, new LED head- and taillights, new interior color combination options and more.
