Operation Support Our Troops-Illinois, Inc.

How it began:

Operation Support Our Troops-Illinois, Inc. (OSOTIL) was founded in 2003 by Deb Rickert, mother of a West Point cadet, as a branch of a national organization whose mission was to support the troops deployed overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq. Deb began collecting donations of snacks, toiletries, and other "creature comforts" not readily available to the troops and sending boxes of these items using her dining room table as the base of operations. She was soon joined by Joanne Bradna, another military mom, and by their combined efforts, along with that of many volunteers, the organization grew to what it is today. In January 2006 OSOTIL incorporated in the state of Illinois as an independent 501(c)3 organization. Operation Support Our Troops-Illinois, Inc. continues to be one of the largest volunteer based miltary support efforts in the country and is funded solely by donations. OSOTIL is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization , therefore, your donations and contributions are tax exempt. Click here to view or down load a copy of our 501(c)3 letter in PDF format.??Approximately 94 cents of every donated dollar goes toward OSOTIL programs. Please Click Here to view our audited 2007 financials.??OSOTIL has the support of hundreds of individual and corporate donors that help us to accomplish our goals year after year. Please see our Corporate Partner page (please click here) along with the Rockin' For the Troops Sponsor pages (please click here) for a listing of all of our generous corporate benefactors and sponsors. In 2006, OSOTIL partnered with Actor, Musician and Humanitarian, Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band for "Rockin' For the Troops". Rockin' has become a yearly tradition and is one of the premier Summer events in the Chicagoland area raising close to a million dollars for programs to support our troops, veterans and military families.

What we do:

Most people want to support our brave men and women in uniform but just don't know how or what to do. OSOTIL provides a variety of ways that the average citizen, school, class or community organization can get involved and make a tangible difference in the life of a military person.??In addition to our care package program and Family Resource and Support Team (FRST), OSOTIL has financially supported the programs of other military service organizations like the USO, Wounded Warrior Project and Fisher House for Illinois. OSOTIL has raised and donated over $125,000 to improve the facilities of Hines VA Hospital.

How you can help:

Monetary donations are always welcome. The organization is funded completely by the philanthropy of donors. The shipping of each box requires approx. $25 in postage. Over 25,000 packages have been sent to date - an average of 120 boxes per week. Ninety-four cents out of every one dollar of your tax deductible donation goes to military support programs. Checks can be made out to Operation Support Our Troops-Illinois, Inc.

Donate items from our "wish list" yourself, or organize a drive to collect these items. Scout groups, school groups, church groups and workplace collections have been a successful source of items for us in the past. Drop off sites are located throughout the suburbs, and are listed on our website, www.osotil.org.

Become a volunteer and contribute your time, talents and energies at whatever level is comfortable for you. We always welcome help with preparing items for shipping, organization and fundraising.
