Chevy Bolt is Beating its Competitors

When General Motors revealed the Bolt EV three years ago, they claimed this Chevrolet concept car would deliver drivers 200 miles on one charge. And it would cost around $30,000.

Well, they made good on their promise in the most impressive way. Not only did they craft a compelling car with a compact crossover feel consumers are seeking, but an electric vehicle that reaches 0-60 in less than seven seconds and up to 250 miles from one charge—which is about 20 miles further than its main competitor, Tesla Model S.

Which, by the way, the Bolt is crushing in the numbers game. Chevy delivered 2,987 Chevrolet Bolt EVs in November and sold over 3,000 vehicles in December (nearly 24,000 in all of 2017), while Tesla only delivered 1,550 Model 3s in 2017's fourth quarter. Don’t be surprised if you’ve been hearing the phrase, “Tesla is in trouble,” recently. It’s true.

The Bolt is the best-selling electric vehicle in the United States. GM got the edge by delivering the first long-range electric car to the masses. Though the Bolt might be considered the underdog against the Model 3, GM has been much more successful in achieving its production goals.

No other EV on the market can compare with the Bolt in power, price point and range. Outfitted with a60 kWh battery pack (the same one used in Tesla’s original base Model S), the Bolt delivers 200 horsepower and 266 pounds-feet of torque. Though the Nissan Leaf SV has a close starting MSRP of $34,200, it only offers up to 107 miles with its 30 kWh battery, 107 horsepower and 187 pounds-feet of torque.

The Ford Focus Electric may have the lowest starting price (at $29,120), but still only has a 115-mile range and delivers 160 horsepower and 146 pounds-feet of torque. The Bolt also outpaces this and the 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf, which starts at $30,4951 and delivers 125-mile range, 134 horsepower and 214 pounds-feet of torque, close to the Kia Soul EV’s 109 horsepower, 210 pounds-feet of torque and 93-mile range.

“The Chevrolet Bolt EV is an affordable, world-changing vehicle that delivers on the promise of an electric car for the masses,” said Drew Winter of WardsAuto, upon winning a 2018 Wards 10 Best Engines Award. “It is quick and smartly designed and its official range of 238 miles makes it attractive to a wider audience. Its 266 pounds-feet of torque delivers thrilling acceleration, which makes it fun to drive every day, and it is available now in dealerships in all 50 states.”

This award comes alongside other accolades, including recognition as Motor Trend® 2017 Car of the Year, Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year and a 2017 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) when equipped with the Driver Confidence II Package.
