A New Turbo Engine is Coming to the 2019 Chevy Silverado

Hey Chevy fans! The wait is over and we can finally announce that Chevrolet is adding a four-cylinder turbocharged engine to the all-new 2019 Silverado pickup truck. This new addition will make the new Silverado the most economical pickup available on Chevy dealership lots for drivers who favor trucks with a high mpg.

The new 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine will produce an SAE-certified 307 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. If that doesn’t get you excited, we’re not sure what will.

“It punches above its weight,” Tom Sutter, chief engineer for the new engine, said in a recent statement. “[The truck] will be very competitive in fuel efficiency,” Sutter affirmed.

The automaker recently released the new engine’s specs to dealers. (Fuel economy ratings and towing capacity details aren’t available yet but should be out closer to the vehicle’s ship date in late summer or early fall of 2018.)

Here’s what we know so far: the new engine will weigh 80 pounds less than the 4.3-liter V6 gas engine available in some current Silverados. The V6 produces 285 horsepower, 305 lb.-ft. of torque, and gets 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. By comparison, the new turbocharged engine features significant improvements in horsepower and torque and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 7 seconds or less. That means drivers who enjoy the V6 are about to be absolutely delighted by the new turbocharged 2.7-liter option.

The Silverado’s new turbocharged engine uses double overhead camshafts, continuously variable valve time, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation), start/stop technology, an electric water pump, a variable-pressure oiling system, active thermal management to get the engine warmed up faster than ever, and an integrated exhaust manifold. All this new tech means that the new engine is slated to be one of Chevrolet’s most exciting, ground-breaking offerings in years.

Chevy dealers were also thrilled to learn that the automaker plans to offer six different powertrain configurations across its truck lineup in 2019: the four-cylinder gasoline turbo, a new Duramax 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel, a 4.3-liter V6, and three variable V8 options. Obviously the V8 will be the most popular choice, but this lineup of engine options is nothing to scoff at.
